Kansas Legislature Overrides Gov. Veto of Pro-Gun Bill

Last month on April 8th, the Kansas Legislature passed a bill protecting the gun rights of residents in the state.

HB 2058 addressed the following:

  • Individuals 18 to 20 years of age could apply for a Kansas concealed carry permit.
  • During a declared state of emergency, the Attorney General may issue an alternative concealed carry license to qualified individuals.
  • Creates a Restoration of Rights process for residents to reestablish their Second Amendment right to possess a firearm upon expungement of certain convictions.
  • Recognize concealed carry licenses from all other states.

The bill had overwhelming success and passed the House 80-43 and the Senate with a 30-8 vote. You would think that a bill passing both chambers with such a majority of votes, the Governor would approve the bill and sign it into law.

A bump in the road:

However, that didn’t happen as Governor Kelly vetoed the bill on May 3rd. Thankfully, Kansas law, as in other states, provides for the legislature to override the governor’s veto.

When Gov. Kelly refused to sign the bill,  it got sent back to the legislature for a veto override vote.

The Kansas Legislature overrode Kansas governor Laura Kelly’s veto of HB 2058.

And just yesterday, on May 3rd, both the House and Senate voted. The results were better than the first time. In the House, the vote was 84-39 and the Senate 31-8.

This override is an example of how important it is to be engaged in your local government. Please pay attention to who you vote for, and engage with them. Let them know what you think and how they should use the authority we grant them. Remember, they work for you.

Never forget. Democrats – EVERY last one of them – are enemies to freedom in America. Some Republicans are as well, Mitt Romney look in the mirror, but every last Democrat is.
